Heads up, Singaporean investors! TD Ameritrade is waving goodbye, and Charles Schwab is rolling out the welcome mat. I’ve been using TD Ameritrade for a while. I loved their robust platform. Then came the news – a merger between TD Ameritrade and Charles Schwab, a big name in the investment world. Exciting, right? But it also meant saying goodbye to TD Ameritrade in Singapore.

As a user of both TD Ameritrade and Charles Schwab. I have witnessed interesting strategic changes in Singapore for both investment platforms and wrote about it in my blog.

If you are a TD Ameritrade user, here’s a quick rundown of what’s changing and how to stay on top of your investments:

Who are TD Ameritrade and Charles Schwab

  • TD Ameritrade was a prominent online brokerage platform, renowned for its user-friendly interface, educational resources, and commission-free trades. It offered a diverse range of investment options, including stocks, ETFs, options, and more.
  • Charles Schwab, another industry giant, has been a leader in discount brokerage for decades, providing a vast selection of investment products and a robust trading platform.

The Merger: A Strategic Alliance

In 2020, Charles Schwab acquired TD Ameritrade in a landmark deal. This merger aimed to create a powerhouse in the online brokerage space, combining the strengths of both companies. Investors anticipated a wider range of investment options, potentially lower fees, and access to more advanced trading tools.

TD Ameritrade Exits Singapore

While the merger brought excitement for many investors globally, this meant Singaporean TD Ameritrade account holders would have their accounts automatically transferred to Charles Schwab.

Moving Day: What to Expect

The official account transition to Charles Schwab is set for Friday, May 10th 2024, starting at 8:30 PM ET. This is an automated process, so you don’t need to take any drastic actions. However, some key points to remember:

  • New Login Credentials: Create a new Schwab Login ID and password beforehand for a smooth transition.
  • Existing Schwab Accounts: If you already have a Schwab account, you’ll use the same login to access all your holdings, including your transferred TD Ameritrade account(s).
  • Multiple TD Ameritrade Accounts: Don’t worry; Schwab will create a separate account for each of your existing TD Ameritrade accounts. Consolidation options will be available later.

Below is the official timeline for the transfer.

Accessing Your Investments After the Move

Once on board with Schwab, here’s how you’ll navigate your investments:

  • Farewell tdameritrade.com: You’ll no longer be able to use the TD Ameritrade platform. However, you’ll have full access through Schwab’s user-friendly interface on Schwab.com and the Schwab Mobile app.
  • Thinkorswim Lives On: The powerful thinkorswim trading platform you know from TD Ameritrade is here to stay! You can continue using thinkorswim desktop, web, and mobile versions with your Schwab login. All your settings and preferences will be transferred seamlessly.

If you are Trading Options and Derivatives:

  • Options Trading: Your options approval level will transfer with your account to Schwab. Both platforms use similar systems, ensuring a smooth transition.
  • Futures & Forex Traders: Your ability to trade futures and forex will also transfer. You’ll continue using the familiar thinkorswim platform.

While saying goodbye to the familiar TD Ameritrade brand might feel like a change, I am glad that the powerful thinkorswim trading platform stays.
